How Many Songs do I Need For My Wedding?

So the movies have only really ever included 3 songs - the walking down the aisle, first dance and maybe the father-daughter dance. So you’re thinking, okay so I only need 3-ish songs? Then eventually you realise you essentially need a whole album of songs to play throughout the day! So what exactly do you need songs for on your wedding day? I got you! As well as loving film, I also LOVE music and have a billion playlists with loads of my favourite songs for different times! This is a list of the times music should be playing during your day! My next post will be a huge playlist of song recommendations! With both classics and ones you may never have heard of.

When do I need to play music at my wedding?

  • Start off your day with a killer playlist to sing with your pals whilst you battle the pre-wedding nerves whilst getting ready!

  • Arrival playlist - songs for your guests to come into the ceremony location to.

  • A pre-entrance song, a warning song to your other half if you will! Sounds ominous, but it’s a good idea to let your partner know that you’ll be walking down the aisle to meet them pretty soon!

  • Possibly the biggest song on your day - your walking down the aisle song, often a really tear jerker!

  • A handful of songs to play during the signing of the register, your guests can’t sit in silence! Well they can, but it’s sometimes best to fill the quiet.

  • You’re finally married! Hooray! Now you need a song to exit the room to as your guests cheer you on!

  • Songs playing in the reception venue/room for background noise for your guests to mingle to.

  • First dance, the other biggest song on your day! This song should be one that you and your partner love, it doesn’t have to scream romance either! Just one song that you and your partner love to listen to together.

  • Special dances (e.g. father-daughter, mother-son dance).

  • A mixture of wedding classics, upbeat pop songs, everyone’s favourite current songs and a mixture of you and your partner’s favourite music. (It might be a good idea to ask each guest to provide a song request on their RSVP). This will get the party started and going until LATE late.

That list may seem quite daunting but don’t worry, you can reuse songs, most people do! For example, using the same playlist during guest arrival to the ceremony location, signing of the register and mingling. Plus, I’ve got a great wedding playlist you can use/take inspo from which will be in my next post!

At the end of the day, it’s your wedding so if you want to just play Justin Timberlake’s discography all day then do it! Maybe don’t play Cry Me a River until later on in the night though.

I hope this blog post has helped a little bit. If you’re still feeling daunted by music choices make sure to check my next post for the best songs to play at your wedding! It’ll include Spotify links to ready made playlists!

Happy wedding planning!
